Vahan data
India's EV transition, by the registration data.
Electric vehicle registrations from the Ministry of Road Transport's Vahan database — broken down by form factor, by state and over time. Read live, and corrected for two quirks in the source data that make most published EV charts wrong.

Why these numbers differ from other EV charts.
The Vahan public dashboard is the authoritative source for Indian vehicle registrations, but three things about it will quietly produce a wrong chart. All three are handled here.
- There are two electric fuel codes, and they must be added together. Registrations migrate from
ELECTRIC(BOV)toPURE EVaround 2025. Read either one alone and two-wheelers appear to fall by three quarters in a single year. They did not — the vehicles moved between codes. This page sums both. - Vahan's own "EV type" filter is unusable for history. That field was only populated from 2024, so it reports single-digit EV registrations for years when India was registering hundreds of thousands. This page filters on fuel type instead.
- The current year is incomplete. It is always a partial count and is marked as such throughout, never compared like-for-like against a full year.
- These are registrations, not sales, and battery electric only — plug-in and strong hybrids are separate fuel codes and are excluded. Registrations lag sales, and vehicles in states with weak reporting arrive late.
